On April 5 2026 Central Bank of Rwanda tweeted: Rwandan Franc (FRW) is only legal tender in Rwanda. Crypto-assets NOT authorized for payments, FRW conversion, or P2P trading involving FRW under current framework.
Three days later Rwanda officially adopted new law regulating virtual asset businesses creating legal framework for cryptocurrencies, stablecoins, tokenized assets, and other blockchain-based financial services.

National Bank of Rwanda has been running regulatory sandbox with 17 live companies.
