Kraken vs Binance vs Bitget: what can be compared fairly?
The defensible comparison is between equivalent products for an eligible account. An instant-buy quote, a spot order-book fill and a leveraged perpetual position have different economics. An exchange’s terms, account tier, currency pair and payment method matter more than its brand-level score.

Interpretation: Binance and Bitget show lower undiscounted standard spot rates than the Kraken Pro entry tier retrieved for this review. That is a fee-table observation, not proof that either delivers the lowest total cost. An account’s higher tier, different product, spread, currency conversion or exit charge can change the result. Buying an exchange token or leaving more assets on a platform introduces risks that fee savings alone do not capture.
Eligibility comes before every comparison
A restriction is a stop condition, not a negative score. Unknown access stays unresolved. Neither trading frequency nor a preference for low fees can override legal, geographic, identity-verification or product requirements. Do not use a VPN, another person’s account or inaccurate residency details to evade restrictions.

Its derivatives eligibility page distinguishes non-US derivatives from Kraken Derivatives US. - Binance: Read the terms served for your account and location. For a global audience, the relevant unit is resident jurisdiction + contracting entity + exact product + account status. For South African readers, as for readers elsewhere, a displayed ZAR quote or payment option is not enough to establish a direct bank-deposit or withdrawal route. 1. I want to buy crypto from my bank account
Record the permitted entity, account verification level, home currency, payment provider, minimum/maximum, deposit cost, FX quote and any withdrawal hold. Distinguish a native bank deposit from a card purchase, third-party onramp or P2P payment. Verify the reverse path back to your own bank before comparing the purchase fee.
2. I want to trade spot regularly
Use the same pair, order size and observation time for each eligible route. Record maker/taker rates, realistic maker-fill share, expected spread/slippage, withdrawal network and total traded notional. A limit order that immediately executes can be a taker fill. A lower maker fee does not establish that your order will fill.

3. I want futures, margin or automated trading
Confirm eligibility for the exact contract before comparing costs. Record collateral, margin model, funding/borrow charges, liquidation rules, API permissions and the procedure for cancelling orders and disabling automation. A spot account, copy-trading feature or public API does not by itself establish derivatives eligibility. This review has not measured bot execution or liquidation performance.
4. I need reliable withdrawal and account recovery
Check the destination asset/network or fiat rail, withdrawal minimum, fee, hold, address controls and the account-recovery procedure. Record an official support route and what information recovery requires. Do not disclose passwords, API secrets, seed phrases or identity documents to this page. Published support hours are not measured resolution times.
Use arithmetic, not a personal-fit score
For an equivalent spot-trading scenario, an estimate of execution cost is:
Total executed notional × weighted trading fee + spread/slippage allowance + fixed costs. Weighted trading fee = maker share × maker rate + taker share × taker rate. Enter percentages consistently, and count every fill, including entries and exits. Add funding or borrowing separately where relevant.
Fictional example: Both routes have $20,000 of total executed notional, entirely taker fills. Route A charges 0.10%, has a 0.05% execution allowance and $20 of fixed costs: $20 + $10 + $20 = $50. Route B charges 0.20%, has a 0.02% allowance and $5 of fixed costs: $40 + $4 + $5 = $49. The lower headline fee is not the cheaper complete route in this example. These assumptions are not quotes from any named exchange.
Do not subtract fees twice when a quote already includes them. Compare the final amount received for all-in buy/convert quotes, and distinguish a trading-cost estimate from a complete bank-to-bank cash-out estimate. Security and support: useful controls, unmeasured outcomes
Kraken’s account-security guidance describes passkeys, a Master Key and Global Settings Lock. These are concrete features to investigate, not evidence of a 100/100 safety score. Their value depends on configuration, recovery arrangements and the threats being considered.
For every candidate, inspect sign-in protection, withdrawal restrictions, API permission limits and the recovery path. Account-takeover controls do not prove solvency, uninterrupted withdrawals or reimbursement after a failure.
