DeFi Tokens: Revisiting the 2025 List and Separating Token Rights from Yield

A protocol’s activity does not automatically translate into income for its token holders. DN’s historical 2025 list is no longer presented as a current investment ranking. This update removes unverified exchange listings and promotional forecasts, explains the difference between owning a token and supplying assets, and gives readers a worksheet for checking the rights and risks behind a DeFi claim.

What Matters: A protocol’s activity does not automatically translate into income for its token holders. DN’s historical 2025 list is no longer presented as a current investment ranking. This update removes unverified exchange listings and promotional forecasts, explains the difference between owning a token and supplying assets, and gives readers a worksheet for checking the rights and risks behind a DeFi claim.

The historical list is not a current portfolio

The original article named AAVE, INDEX, GNO, BAL, FARM, CREAM and CRV. Those names are retained here to identify the coverage being corrected. Their inclusion is not a recommendation, valuation assessment or confirmation of current operational status, trading pairs or availability in your country.

The former “Where to Trade” lists and referral links have been withdrawn from this article because present listings, supported networks and eligibility were not verified for each pair. We also removed the forecast that these tokens would dominate 2025 and the blanket claim of strong fundamentals and deep liquidity. No replacement winner or return target is supplied.

Owning a token is different from supplying assets

Aave provides a concrete example. Its AAVE documentation identifies AAVE as a governance token. Its separate supplying documentation describes interest on supplied assets, with rates influenced by utilisation and governance parameters. Buying AAVE is not the same transaction as supplying a different asset to a lending pool, and does not by itself establish entitlement to that pool’s supply yield.

Read the actual mechanism for any staking, fee-sharing or reward claim. Rights can depend on an additional deposit, lock, delegation or programme. The token ticker alone does not tell you which risks you are accepting or whether a quoted reward can be sold or withdrawn.

DN token-rights worksheet

ClaimEvidence requiredDo not assume
GovernanceCurrent voting rules, delegation, thresholds and execution powers.A small holding gives meaningful control or a financial distribution.
YieldThe exact deposited asset, source of payments, variable rate and loss conditions.A governance token earns the advertised supply rate automatically.
DiversificationCurrent underlying holdings, weights, rebalancing rules and dependencies.Several token names mean independent sources of risk.
LiquidityCurrent executable size, spread, network and exit restrictions. An old exchange listing means a usable market today.
SecurityDeployed version, audit scope, administrator rights and incident history.Non-custodial means nobody can affect parameters or that loss is impossible.
AccessThe actual product and service terms applicable to the reader.A public website or token listing confirms legal eligibility.

Non-custodial is not risk-free

Aave’s risk documentation describes risks and mitigation measures rather than eliminating risk. Governance and other authorised roles can affect protocol parameters. The original description of complete decentralisation with no central influence was too absolute.

For any DeFi position, consider contract failures, collateral declines, liquidation where borrowing is involved, price-reference dependencies, liquidity shortages and administrative changes. A favourable protocol usage chart cannot substitute for analysing the specific instrument you would hold.

Use a research record, not a headline ranking

Write down the proposed asset, network, rights, costs and exit conditions, and mark unknowns explicitly. The worksheet does not calculate suitability or certify a token. This update has not re-audited all seven projects, measured returns or executed trades. Use DN’s institutional research workspace to structure further diligence.

Methodology and corrections

The original URL, author, publication date and featured image are preserved. This correction distinguishes documented changes from unresolved current availability. Source descriptions are not independent operational tests. The worksheet is a research aid, not a recommendation or guarantee.

Change log, 15 October 2026: corrected the claims identified above, withdrew unverified current rankings and commercial routes, and added primary-source links and a DN research worksheet. No historical publication date has been relabelled as a new article.
