Scroll – zkEVM Scaling Solution for Ethereum

Scroll zkEVM-based zkRollup on Ethereum Explained.

Scroll is a zkEVM-based zkRollup on Ethereum that enables native compatibility for existing Ethereum applications and tools.

Scroll is now live in Testnet. Users can interact with dApps, deploy smart contracts, and explore L2 blocks on Scroll’s Testnet.

The Alpha Testnet consists of Ethereum’s Goerli Testnet and the Scroll Alpha test network. Goerli is an Ethereum test network with PoS-based consensus, while Scroll Alpha is a zero-knowledge rollup testnet deployed on top of the former. There are some pre-deployed demo applications: a bridge between Goerli and Scroll Alpha based on the Hop Exchange UI, a block explorer for Scroll Alpha using Blockscout, and a rollup explorer.

To view submitted transactions, check out Ethereum’s official Goerli block explorers on Etherscan and Blockscout.

How to get started with Scroll

Simply visit the main website domain https://scroll.io/. Click the Join Alpha Testnet button on the home page.

You can then proceed to configure MetaMask for the testnet.

There are several things to test including the bridge and block explorer on both layer 1 and 2.

Connect your MetaMask to interact with the smart contracts.

You need to have some testnet tokens to transact. It is recommended that you sign up with Alchemy to claim  via the faucet.

Now you can claim some ETH.

Once you receive the tokens, you can then proceed to complete some tasks e.g. using the bridge.

Suggested workflow to explore the Testnet

  • Add the Alpha Testnet configurations to your wallet.
  • Request test tokens in the Goerli network from any Ethereum Faucet app. (example)
  • Transfer test tokens from Goerli to Scroll Alpha through the Bridge app.
  • Transfer tokens to other wallets on Scroll Alpha using your wallet.
  • View the status of transactions and blocks in the Goerli & Alpha Block Explorers and the Rollup Explorer.
  • Withdraw tokens from Scroll Alpha to Goerli through the Bridge app.

When bridging, if the transaction fails it could mean that your MetaMask wallet might not be up to date. Reset your MetaMask account before using Scroll Bridge.
You can then pay the gas fee using the testnet ETH.
Don’t forget to view the status of transactions and blocks in the Goerli & Alpha Block Explorers and the
Rollup Explorer.

According to the testnet status the Alpha Testnet is going according to plan for the Scroll team.

Stay tuned for more Scroll ecosystem developments. If scroll announes an airdrop, hopefully performing some of the above tasks will earn you a nice allocation.
